The Ekpe society is a traditional Lodge of the Efik tribal lineages. Found in various styles, designs and display formations in many countries like Brazil, Cameroon, Egypt, and mostly in some of the Eastern and southern regional communities of Nigeria through which the Efik royal peoples have sojourned in their millennial migrations along the coastal trading belts of West Africa. For the Efik Kingdoms, Ekpe masquerade and its entire lodge is the symbol of authority for the kings and the "Supercop'' policeman of the society. Ekpe Masquerade played a very significant role in the propagation and spread of Christianity within the traditional Efik Kingdoms, as it was used to drive new converts to Church on Sundays; that is why in all of the Old Kingdoms of the Efik people you get to find an Ekpe shrine or Lodge sharing space with the Old time Religion Churches. Ekpe is a key element in traditional cultural festivals like Kingship coronations, chieftaincy title celebration, royal burial rites and so on. The traditional Christmas Festival in Efik Kingdoms is not complete without the Ekpe Carnival. Welcome to Efik people pride.
